Performance

Organist and accompanist, available across the south west.

I've spent over thirty years playing for weddings, funerals, services, recitals and concerts — in village churches, school chapels, town halls and cathedrals. ARCO, highly experienced and based just outside Taunton, I'm comfortable on all instruments from a two-manual parish organ to a four-manual cathedral console, and I bring the same care to a quiet weekday funeral as to a full choral evensong.

Weddings

The right music can hold a wedding together — the gathering, the entrance, the signing, the recessional — and the wrong music can quietly undo it. I'll talk you through your options, suggest pieces that suit the day and the building, liaise with your vicar, priest or registrar, and turn up early enough to register the instrument properly.

If you already know exactly what you want, I'll play it. If you have no idea where to start, I can guide your through all the options, with the most-asked-for processionals, signing-of-the-register pieces and recessionals — Wagner, Mendelssohn, Widor, Karg-Elert, Bach, Hollins and so on — along with quieter alternatives.

I cover Somerset, Devon and Dorset routinely, and travel further by arrangement.

Funerals and memorial services

Funeral work is some of the most important playing I do. I understand the pressure on funeral directors and situation of families in the days beforehand — I'll be flexible about timings, calm about last-minute changes, and discreet on the day. Hymns, voluntaries before and after, and a piece for the committal or reflection are the usual shape; I'm happy to suggest repertoire if the family would rather not choose, and equally happy to learn something specific that mattered to the person who has died.

I play at crematoria as well as churches, and I'm comfortable with both pipe and digital instruments.

For short-notice funeral enquiries, please phone rather than email — I'll always try to help.

Services, recitals and concerts

I play regularly for Sunday services and choral evensongs across the region, deputise at short notice, and give solo recitals on instruments I'm invited to play. I'm always glad to hear from churches needing a regular or occasional organist, and from concert promoters and societies looking to programme an organ recital.

Accompanying

Twenty-plus years of accompanying exam candidates, festival entrants and concert soloists, on both organ and piano. I'm sympathetic to nerves, alert to tempo, and well used to sight-reading the unexpected.

  • Exams — ABRSM, Trinity and MTB, in person or recorded

  • Festivals — including the Brian Cresswell Music Festival 2026, where I'm the official accompanist

  • Concerts and recitals — soloists, duos, choral societies, chamber groups

  • Choral evensongs and one-off services — for visiting choirs and ad-hoc groups

A few practical questions...

How far will you travel?
Somerset, Devon and Dorset routinely. Further by arrangement — get in touch with the date and venue and I'll let you know.

What does the fee cover?
For weddings: a preparatory meeting or call, rehearsal time at the instrument, the ceremony itself, and pre- and post-service music. For funerals: liaison with the funeral director, hymns and voluntaries, and any specific piece the family would like learned. I'll always confirm what's included in writing before the day.

Do you have a wedding music guide?
Yes — drop me a line and I'll send the PDF. It lists the most-requested processionals, signing pieces and recessionals, with notes on what suits which kind of building.

Can you play at a crematorium?
Yes. Most local crematoria use digital instruments, which I'm entirely comfortable with.

Will you play music that isn't from the classical repertoire?
Within reason, yes — many couples and families want a piece that mattered to them, and a sensitive organ arrangement of almost anything is possible. Some pieces transfer better than others; I'll be honest if I think something will sound thin on an organ rather than pretending otherwise.
